Scoliosis affects about 2% of the population and tends to run in families. It is the name given to a condition which occurs when the spine curves from side to side as opposed to just inwards in the lower back region. On an X-ray the spine of a patient with scoliosis takes an S or C shape form instead of appearing in a straight line. The result is unequal muscle tension on either side of the spine which may result in pain. For more information on Scoliosis visit www.orthoinfo.aaos.org
